Protection of Red Wolfs

The red wolf was officially declared extinct in the wild by 1987. They are protected by the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern North Carolina. Thirty-eight zoos in 23 different states are helping in the national breeding program. Red Wolf hunting is now illegal in the United States.
